Short answer
In one 12,000-email test, AI-only emails got 4.1% replies, human-written 10.4%, and AI research with a human finish 14.7%. AI-written email was also flagged as spam at 7.8%, against 2.9% for human-written.
Key takeaways
- Spam rate: AI-written 7.8%, human-written 2.9%.
- Reply rate in one 12,000-email test: AI-only 4.1%, human-written 10.4%, hybrid 14.7%.
- The AI-to-human gap is closing on replies but not on spam flags.
- Use AI for research and first drafts. Let a person write the final message.
What do the numbers say?
Saleshandy, AI vs human cold emails tested 12,000 cold emails. AI-only emails got 4.1% replies, human-written 10.4%, and AI research with a human finish 14.7%.
The bigger problem is the spam folder. AI-written emails were flagged as spam at 7.8%, against 2.9% for human-written (Phrasly, AI vs human cold email reply rates 2026). Hybrid sat at 3.1%, close to human-written.
The reply gap is shrinking. FirstSales, AI vs human cold email found it narrowed from about 2 points in 2024 to about 1 in 2026. The spam gap has not closed.
Why does AI-only fail?
- It sounds the same. Mail filters and buyers have both learned the patterns: the flattering opener, the "I noticed", the three-bullet pitch.
- It personalises the wrong thing. Mentioning someone's alma mater is not relevance. Mentioning the campus they are opening next year is.
- It cannot judge. Whether this person is the right buyer, whether the timing is right, whether the tone fits the culture. That is a human call.
What we let AI do
Map the market. Track signals like new hires, funding and expansion. Enrich and verify contact data. Draft research notes on every account. Run sending, follow-up timing and reporting.
What stays with a person
Checking every prospect is real, in role and the right buyer. Writing the first message for one reader. Engaging on their posts. Handling every reply the same day. Deciding what to change each week.
That split is the whole idea behind Honest Outbound. AI finds and sorts. A person decides and writes.
Questions people ask
Can buyers really tell an AI email?
Often, yes. Even when they cannot name why, they feel the sameness and delete.
Is it okay to use AI at all in outreach?
Yes. It is excellent at research, enrichment and drafts. It should not decide who to contact or press send on its own.
What about AI SDR tools?
They send at volume with little judgement. The 2026 data on spam rates is the reason we do not use them for first messages.
Will the gap close?
On reply rates it is closing. On spam flags and on trust, a person finishing the message still wins.
